East Bay Hills Project
– About this Website –
The East Bay Hills Project website contains aerial photographs and images taken by railfans that pertain to the relationship between the Bay Area and the Central Valley in the categories of water, agriculture, industry, transportation, eminent domain and highway construction, parks and recreation, education, and land development. The origin of the project was to follow the route of the Sacramento Northern Railway.
– Our History –
The inspiration for the East Bay Hills Project website is found in and along many of the trails and roads between Oakland and Mount Diablo via Shepherd Canyon and Moraga that owe their existence to the former Sacramento Northern Railway. Research was initiated in 2009 by contacting public agencies responsible for large sections of territory in the East Bay Hills, and railfans that had photographed the railway in the 1940s and 1950s. The website debuted in April 2011, and the scope of the subjects covered has increased as material highlighting the connections the railway made with the Central Valley became available.
